The story follows Rodion Raskolnikov, a destitute former student in St. Petersburg, who believes he is exceptional and above the law. Raskolnikov is narcissistic and believes he is a great man. To prove this he kills an elderly women with an axe , who he views as greedy, unfeeling, selfish person, and someone who doesn’t deserve to live. He is forced to kill another woman, Lizaveta (the elderly women’s sister) when she walks in on him brutally murdering the elderly woman, but he soon feels intense guilt and inner conflict about his actions. While he is facing mental torment, he meets Sonia who helps him find hope and redemption.
